Remember Stella Liebeck? She was the old lady who burned herself with a cup of 49 cent McDonald’s coffee and was awarded $2.9 Million. We, as a society mocked her mercilessly following the case. I did it too. I mean what WON’T we sue for? But have you ever seen photos of the injuries that she received from spilling a cup of 180 degree McDonald’s coffee in her lap?
Stella was sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car and attempted to put some cream and sugar in her coffee. She had no idea that coffee had been heated to 180 degrees. I mean why would anybody expect their coffee to be 180 degrees which was McDonald’s policy at the time.

THIS IS WHAT MCDONALD’S COFFEE DID TO THIS POOR WOMAN’S BODY!
She was just wearing a pair of old lady pants at the time, which is no protection from the scalding coffee which burned her thighs and legs.
She had to undergo a series of horribly painful skin grafts following the incident and her doctors weren’t even sure she would survive. She was small and old and had third degree burns covered a good chunk of her body.
When her family went to McDonald’s and to ask them to help pay for her medical treatment, they expected McDonald’s to happily step up and help. They just assumed that once McDonald’s saw the damage their coffee had done that they would help pay and make changes to the temperature of their coffee. But NO. McDonalds (who had thousands upon thousands of complaints logged about their coffee temperature over the years) pretty much laughed in her face and then used their influence in the media to make us all think she was a crazy old lady who was willing to sue anyone over anything. “Of Course it’s hot. It’s supposed to be hot. It’s coffee!” We were told this, and it made sense to us.
A photo of poor Stella
Thank God the jury saw things for what they were and awarded her the $2.9 million, which was later reduced to around $640,000.00 – God knows how many dollars McDonalds was making on their 180 degree coffee every day, but I assure you, they could afford the settlement. I think the judge should have stuck to the $2.9 million just to punish McDonald’s for their lack of compassion.
There are many FAR WORSE photos of Stella and the burns to her body. Huge black chunks of skin hanging off of her tiny frail legs.
Does seeing the injuries change your mind about this case? Imagine this happened to someone that you loved. A grandparent or a child? Not such a crazy old lady is she?
